因为是numbers，就只有一个number，哪里来的s，这个是考点1，还有一个考点就是区别于核心指代和继承指代，the numbers是继承指代，指代了 number in 1914，而这里的number不是1914年的而是1929年的，所以the number seems to be "but in 1929 almost twice the number (in 1914) of tucks alone came off the assembly lines." it is obviously wrong. 而用了that 就能够区分出两个不同时期，这样子语义通顺明确。

You need the word "that" to identify specifically what number your are referring to. "the" doesn't point back to a specific item earlier in the sentence the way "that" does, and leaves a huge ambiguity you could drive 938,000 trucks through.. :)
