语意不是split，第一次拿到这个题多数人都没法判断哪个语意是对的，甚至根本不知道DE还有语意的区别。

我觉得应该有同学会错选了A吧（我就是--！）？ 是不是在想which 修饰 a minority ？ 我找了好多网上的解释 终于在太傻找到了一个比较好的 贴出来：
因为 which amounts to a little less than half the population of the state 是指一个特定的族裔，而 a minority in California 是泛指，不能用 nonrestrictive clause 来修饰。要修饰就必须用 that，再删去逗号。

which不能跳过in California来修饰minority，因为in Californian不是minority的定语，而是修饰are的状语，中文可以理解为“在California是少数群体”，而不是“California的少数群体”。所以which只能指代California，逻辑错误，不选。

对 RON就是这么解释的，对于noun1+prep+noun2,which 的类型，只用当prep+noun2修饰的是noun1时，which才能够跳过介词短语去修饰noun1。否则，只能就近修饰noun2。

总结一下，以下三种情况which不能跳跃修饰：
1. 修饰对象与which间隔了一个动词。
2. 修饰对象与which间隔了一个带逗号的修饰。
3. 对于noun1+prep+noun2，which 的类型，只用当prep+noun2修饰的是noun1时，which才能够跳过介词短语去修饰noun1。否则，只能就近修饰noun2。

“因为in Californian不是minority的定语，而是修饰are的状语，中文可以理解为“在California是少数群体”，而不是“California的少数群体”------题目中并没有任何一点能明确，句子的意思不是“minority in california” 而是“are ……in california”；也就是说关于“in California”无论修饰的是“are ”还是 “minority ”都是对的，都不影响对句子的判断，并不是需要明确的点。 排除a的主要原因是amount to的subject 不能是“minority ”只能是“non-H whites”

其实这题如果出现在考试里是很难用这个规则的..两个which后面接的都是amounts 因为没有原文 强行说它是指代a minority的事gmat老头也不是没干过

E.amounting to a little less than half the population of the state, down from （what it was a decade ago ）=（it 指代 population）by nearly three-quarters，这句话翻一下就是：人口这个名词减少了3/4，但是应该是人口数量减少了，E不行就选D。

\"Which\" can\'t directly modify \"a minority\", because it\'s inappropriate to say \"A minority amounts to...\".

On the other hand, the comma + __ing construction is perfect here, since \"amounting to xxxx\" is a perfect clarification/explanation of the entire preceding sentence (\"non-Hispanic Whites are ... a minority\").

题意：去年占四分之三，今年只占不到一半

A of B, which/who, relative noun can refer to A, or B, or the whole prep phrase, if there is no ambiguous, it\'s ok, here, which only modify a minority, but Ron said it doesn\'t make sense, because the author intend to express that spanish white amount to xxxx, not a general minority, furthermore, compared with A, D is more clearly to indicate the meaning of the sentence. my own idea

E的错误在于it无指代对象吧？it语义上是要代the population/number of non-N W的，但是原文并没有这个构造出现，导致it在这里只能代个前文出现的population，但是谁的population？语焉不详

DE用doing修饰，解释前面，合理。DE的明显区别在于，E出现了“what it was... ”表达上很啰嗦，故选D。
补充： that is，which was/is，who was.... 这类都有啰嗦的嫌疑语法除了考察规则之外还考虑语义和是否简洁，不要执着的陷在it指代xxxx（代词本身是重要性不太强的考点），要站出来看从全局看这个句子
